The 30-Day Plan to Get Your Small Business Online
If your business does not exist online, it does not exist for most customers. That is not an exaggeration — 97 percent of consumers search online for local businesses. If you are not there, you are invisible. The good news: getting online does not require technical skills or a big budget. Here is a 30-day plan.
Week 1: Foundation
Day 1-2: Claim your Google Business Profile. Go to business.google.com and claim your listing. Fill out every field: business name, address, phone, hours, categories, service area, website (if you have one), and a description of what you do. Add at least 5 photos.
Day 3-4: Set up a simple website. You do not need a custom-designed website to start. A single-page website with your business name, what you do, your service area, contact information, and a few photos is enough. Services like Squarespace, Wix, or a simple landing page builder can have you live in an afternoon.
Day 5-7: Create social media profiles. Choose one or two platforms where your customers spend time. For most local businesses, Facebook and Instagram are the right choices. Set up professional profiles with your logo, description, and contact information.
Week 2: Content and Credibility
Day 8-10: Ask for your first reviews. Contact your last 10 satisfied customers and ask them to leave a Google review. Send them a direct link to make it easy. Even 5-10 genuine reviews dramatically improve your online credibility.
Day 11-14: Create your first content. Post photos of your work, share a customer success story, or write a short post answering a common question in your industry. The content does not need to be polished — it needs to be authentic.
Week 3: Visibility
Day 15-17: List on directories. Add your business to Yelp, Facebook, Apple Maps, Bing Places, and any industry-specific directories. Ensure your name, address, and phone number are identical everywhere.
Day 18-21: Join local online communities. Find Facebook groups, Nextdoor neighborhoods, and local forums where your potential customers gather. Participate genuinely — answer questions, share advice, be helpful.
Week 4: Systems
Day 22-25: Set up lead capture. Make sure every online touchpoint has a clear way for customers to contact you. A contact form on your website. A "Message" button on your Facebook page. A clickable phone number everywhere.
Day 26-28: Create a follow-up system. Decide how you will respond to every inquiry — ideally within minutes. Set up email or text templates for common responses. Consider a simple CRM to track leads.
Day 29-30: Review and plan. Look at what you have built. You now have a Google presence, a website, social media profiles, directory listings, initial reviews, and a system for handling inquiries. Not bad for 30 days.
